Regina Coeli

M: Son of the Century

Regina Coeli is the prison where Amerigo Dumini becomes prisoner 780/GSI, held under high surveillance and isolation. Its role in the account is defined by this confinement and by the sharp contrast between his temporary imprisonment and the gang members who remain free.

Dumini’s confinement

For the time being, Dumini is the only member of the gang to pay for the crime. His imprisonment therefore marks a limited, provisional consequence rather than the apprehension of the group as a whole. The account identifies his status and conditions of custody but gives no further description of the prison itself.

A provisional punishment

Dumini is promised an early release, and, certain of his impunity, agrees. His confinement is thus paired with an expectation that it will not last, while the other members of the gang remain at large. Regina Coeli becomes the setting for an unequal aftermath: one man is isolated in custody, but the broader responsibility for the crime remains uncontained.
